Yahoo Japan Corporation

Aims to achieve 100% shift to renewable energy within three years
Z Holdings Group to pursue membership in RE100 renewable energy initiative

Yahoo Japan Corporation (hereinafter “Yahoo! JAPAN”), the core company of the Z Holdings Corporation (hereinafter “ZHD”) Group, today declares its commitment to the “FY2023 100% Renewable Energy Challenge,” which aims to achieve the shift to 100% renewable energy for electricity used for business operations such as in data centers by fiscal year 2023.

As part of this, the ZHD Group also aims to join RE100*1, a global initiative that aims to procure 100% of the electricity consumed in its business activities from renewable energy sources, at the earliest possible stage. ZHD Group plans to announce the group's medium- to long-term goals for achieving 100% renewable energy usage by the end of fiscal 2021.

In December 2020, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) formulated a “Green Growth Strategy towards 2050 Carbon Neutrality” in collaboration with related ministries and agencies.*2 The Ministry of the Environment has also held "Study Groups on System of Promoting Global Warming Countermeasures," *3 and corporate efforts to address climate change issues have continued to gain importance.

In order to realize a sustainable society, the ZHD Group has promoted initiatives to address climate change issues and has proactively worked to reduce the environmental impact of its business activities. Yahoo! JAPAN has implemented initiatives to mitigate climate change, such as improving the energy efficiency of the data centers it uses and constructing a data center in the U.S. that uses 100% renewable energy for its power supply *4.

Currently, 95% of the electricity Yahoo! JAPAN uses in its business operations is consumed in its data centers. In addition to the data center located in Washington state which powers 100% of its electricity through renewable energy sources, Yahoo! JAPAN will convert 100% of the electricity used in Asian Frontier in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka, and Shirakawa Data Center in Shirakawa City, Fukushima, and the electricity used in its business operations to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power by the end of fiscal 2023.

Shuichi Nishida, Corporate Officer, President of Social Responsibility Promotion Group, Corporate Group of Yahoo! JAPAN said: “ZHD believes that maintaining a healthy global environment is a prerequisite for people's lives and society, without which there will be no development of an IT society. This time, Yahoo! JAPAN, one of the core companies in the ZHD Group, has set a goal of converting 100% of the electricity used in its business operations to renewable energy with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are the cause of climate change and global warming. This will also enable us to provide more environmentally friendly services to Yahoo! JAPAN users. In the future, we will aim to increase our corporate value by promoting the introduction and expansion of the use of renewable energy throughout the entire ZHD Group, including the use of data centers that are 100% renewable energy by group companies.”

■ZHD’s past efforts to mitigate climate change
・Initiatives at data centers
Yahoo! JAPAN operates the majority of the servers required to run its Internet business from its own facilities. At Asian Frontier located in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka, and Shirakawa Data Center located in Shirakawa City, Fukushima, Yahoo! JAPAN implements measures to prevent global warming by using the latest technology, such as air conditioning systems that utilize outside air. Yahoo! JAPAN also works to improve the efficiency of energy use through continuous replacement of facilities and new capital investments.

The U.S. subsidiary of Yahoo! JAPAN, Actapio, Inc. (former YJ America, Inc.) constructed a new data center in Washington State with approximately 1600 racks, and started operations in April 2019. The data center is located in Washington state, where hydraulic power generation is prevalent, and uses 100% renewable energy for its operation. Actapio, Inc. started operation of Yahoo! JAPAN’s first data center outside of Japan (200 racks) in December 2014 in Washington state.
