“Election in the Dark (Audible Election)” received numerous advertising awards including Cannes Lions 2018
“Election in the Dark (Audible Election)”, a website for the visually impaired which was launched for the 2017 Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election and House of Representative election, received numerous advertising awards.
Under the Public Offices Election Act, the paper version of campaign bulletins must be presented as images in PDF format when distributing online. However, PDF files cannot be read aloud by text to speech software making it difficult for the visually impaired to acquire information from campaign bulletins on the Internet. In order to solve this problem, “Election in the Dark (Audible Election)” was developed as an election website for the visually impaired so that information on the candidates can be read aloud. The ability to discover issues and the ideas to solve these social issues were highly evaluated.

“kukai” ranked 2nd in the world in GREEN500, energy efficient super computer ranking
In cooperation with ExaScaler Inc. and HPC SYSTEMS Inc., Yahoo! JAPAN developed “kukai”, a highly energy efficient super computer that is used in deep learning in particular. It was ranked 2nd in the world in GREEN500, energy efficient super computer ranking.
The processing performance per power consumption of “kukai” is top class in the world. “kukai” can process large scale deep learning in short time and for a low cost. In addition, compared to other cases in which the latest and same scale GPU server is used, electricity cost reduction is expected to be around 15%. Processing units such as CPU and GPU generate heat while processing. Therefore, cooling using air conditioning (e.g. fans) is used to maintain the processing ability. Instead of cooling, “kukai” uses liquid immersion, a method in which hardware is directly immersed into non-conductive liquid. Through this method, cooling efficiency is improved and energy saving is achieved.
Yahoo! JAPAN will promote the use of deep learning in more services and functions. Personalization accuracy of content distribution such as ads, news and Internet shopping will be improved so that we will know the people who live in Japan the best and will be able to provide services which can bring about best hospitality as well as solutions to problems.
